Irwin Allen, praised in some circles as a science fiction genius and damned in others as a shameless schlockmeister, produced and directed this fanciful TV-movie. Set in the 21st century, the film concentrates on a group of colonists dwelling in a modernistic underwater city called Pacifica. The emphasis is on drama rather than special effects, as we see the deep-sea denizens struggling to cope with the pressures of their new existence–and their own personal animosities. Stuart Whitman heads a large cast of TV veterans, including Time Tunnel regulars James Darren, Robert Colbert and Whit Bissell, and onetime Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea star Richard Basehart (as the US President). Expanded from a short “demo” pilot film, City Beneath the Sea is the one Irwin Allen project that could have matured into a truly worthwhile TV series; unfortunately no network was interested in subsidizing this expensive effort.

One Response to “City Beneath The Sea (1971)”

  1. Too bad you Couldn’t show the True Movie ‘ City Beneath the Sea ‘, It’s one of the Best Underwater Movies of the time. Though you speak of it in your intro., You present us with V.T.T.B.O.T.S. version instead. Just wish you had the Color version of the original Movie. There were 2 Movies out about the same time, City Beneath the Sea & City Under the Sea. #1. Was about a Modern City, Full of Scientist & Wealthy Familys living in Pacifica, & the President wanting to store the worlds supply of a Rare Power Element – H1-238 in their Gold Vault & an Enemy trying to Steal it. # 2, City Under the Sea, was about an experimental city set up to Farm the Ocean Floor to feed the world & Enemies out to destroy the Sea Farm. Just wish we could find the 2 Movies on DVD, But many pilots for TV Series have been Lost. Others like, The Tripods Series, Earth star Voyager ( Pilot ) Girl from U.N.C.L.E. Series, CHASE TV Series, The WB Movie- PT109, Sea Hunt TV Series, The Man from Atlantis TV Series, UFO TV series, Ect…, Have all been Lost in time. To bad, But Die Hard Sci-Fi Fans will always remember them. Ever hear of the TV series The Champions ? Another lost series.
    Thank-You for the memories.
